Indonesian funeral, Sulawasi. They sacrafice the Buffalo in respect for the dead. Depending on how important the person, up to 20 will die. Pigs too!

After the funeral the coffins are carried to caves. Amazingly the body is kept in the family home for up to a year whilst the funeral is arranged. An effigy is placed by the coffin. As I walked around the caves we had to step over the bones of the departed. When the coffin rots, the bones fall, but are not allowed to be moved.

When a baby dies they do not bury it. They cut open a hollow tree and then reseal it. The tree heals and is said to carry on the life of the child. The tree is therefore sacred and will never be destroyed. As you can see in the photo. Many babies will be buried in the same tree.

The reason behind my trip to Indonesia. Kelimato, The 3 lakes. Due to chemical reactions the volcano has 3 different coloured lakes . Breathtaking. It took me 5 years to get there, but it was worth it. I walked all around the crater rim. Unreal! The lakes are slowly changing due to the sulphur levels. Gradually the colours will fade, ultimately turning the water black.
